The Malfunction Doctrine

A malfunction is not a failure. It's a diagnostic.

In engineering, a malfunction reveals a system's actual state — not its intended one. Most people treat that moment as something to fix. We treat it as something to listen to.

Founded in Montreal, 2021

When institutions shut down and venues closed, Malfunction occupied the void — underground events that filled a space no one else would.

01

The break is the signal.

Every crack, stutter, detour, and derailment carries information that the smooth surface was designed to hide. We don't celebrate failure — we pay attention to what it reveals.

02

Perfection is a performance.

The only flawless things are the ones that haven't been tested. Anything real — art, people, ideas, cities — carries the marks of contact with the world. Those marks are not flaws. They're evidence of life.

03

Occupy the void.

When everyone leaves, something opens up. Malfunction was born in those empty spaces — not to fill them with more noise, but to hold them open long enough for something honest to happen.

04

The human is the glitch.

In an increasingly automated, optimized, AI-mediated world, the unpredictable human element — the taste, the instinct, the irrational conviction — is the malfunction in the machine. And it's the only part that matters.

Divisions

Two arms. One doctrine.

Malfunction Music

Artist management for musicians who make the thing they need to make — not the thing the algorithm rewards. The grant application, the release strategy, the sync placement — tools in service of the art.

Malfunction Ventures

AI-augmented systems where the human stays in the loop. Automation handles the repeatable. The malfunction — the creative judgment, the taste, the 'this doesn't feel right' — that's what we protect.
